PYBC Regatta Roundup

With a 34 boat fleet the 2019 regatta was a great success and we thank everyone who participated. The weather was kind and all races were completed in this years 2 days of racing and one family day event.

Saturdays races consisted of a 2 race series for the keelboats and a separate single race for the Dublin Bay Old Gaffers. Inshore the Junior section held 2 races each day in front of the club.

Keelboat Classes

Notably the top three boats in the keelboats were:

Class1 - 1st Moon Magic, 2nd X-Tension, 3rd Joliba

Class 2 - 1st Enchantrass, 2nd Quartermaster, 3rd Eagle Eye

White Sails - 1st Hillybilly, 2nd Volante, 3rd Shamu

The race results for:

Class 1 - can be found here

Class 2 - can be found here

White Sails - here

Sundays Kish race was forecast for 14-15kts with gusts up in the mid 20s. The race started with a number of boats arriving late to the start line. The wind was steadily picking up throughout the race, with a nice down wind run to the kish light. 2 boats attempted to fly spinnakers, both of which blew out with gusts reaching 28-29 kts. The fleet of 9 boats, which included two 22ft E-boats racing out of Clontarf, made it to the Kish light very quickly before the torturous upwind beat back to Poolbeg lighthouse for the finish. Despite the breeze on the day only a few spinnakers were left in tatters and all the fleet and crew made it home safely with a nice a breezy story to tell.

The heavy weather was a day for the bigger cruisers in the fleet. In 3rd place was Wakey Wakey, 2nd was Black Opal and 1st went to the winner of Class 1 Saturday racing, Tony O'Daly's, Moon Magic.

Junior Dinghy Classes

The PYBC Junior Section had a very successful 2019 Regatta. Over 3 days of parties, children's play area, dance tent BBQs and family fun not to mention the Junior Dinghy Racing! We had 20 entrants who sailed triple handed in Picos and double handed in Toppers. Ciara McCormack our Senior Sailing Instructor along with our service providers the INSS managed a beautiful 3 heat race around a triangular course right in front of the club for all parents and spectators to watch. Some teams faltered a bit at the beginning but through the 3 heats the skills and persistence became evident for the fourth race which was the final. The Winners of this year's inaugural Alexandra Basin Junior Sailing Trophy: The Smith-Kelley Cup were brothers Alex and Callum and Giacomo! Well done to the boys. Their performance over the years really paid off. We now look forward to a full season of Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening junior club racing, summer sailing camps and our Junior Fare in September.

Dublin Bay Old Gaffer Classes

It's a beautiful site to see the classics racing in the bay and once again the OGA held their regatta at Poolbeg Yacht and Boat Club. Unfortunately, not all OGA boats could attend due to the weather experienced just before the event, meaning many of the overseas boats could not make the weekend. That didn't stop the Gaffers holding a full days racing on the Saturday and certainly didn't stop them from partying til all hours every day!

Race Winners were as follows:

Smaller Gaff Rigged Class - 1st Mona, 2nd Alice of Howth

Larger Gaff Rigged Class - 1st Maybird, 2nd Naomh Cronain

Bermudan Class - 1st Don Carlos (Out of 3 boats)

Well done to all that participated and a major thank you to the event organisers and the club staff for a job very well done. We would also like to thank all our sponsors who helped make this event happen.

In the mean time, other than club racing the next event is the 3 Islands Race on the 30 of June. See you all there!
