Cruising Corner Events and News for May

We are moving forward on a number of fronts:

Crew and Skipper training

Cruising Corner events in May will happen on the water each Sunday Morning, starting at 11:00 for 2 to 3 hours. This will allow us to have a productive session and then participants can avail of lunch in the Club with family and friends. More information can be found HERE

The first session will be next Sunday and will happen on the Marina.

  • 1. May 7th 11:00hrs Train the Trainer for Skippers and Experienced Crew

All skippers end up training new crew from time to time. I know from my own experience and reports from others that the experience of the newbie crew member is mixed.

The purpose of this session is to allow skipper to see things from the point of view of a new crew member who has never stepped on a boat before and to teach them basic skills that allows them to be safe and useful additions to the crew.

  • 2.May 14th 11:00hrs Man overboard and Heaving To

This is part of the Skipper Fundamentals skills that can be found here

  • 3.May 21st 11:00hrs Mooring practice

Manoeuvring in Poolbeg can be tricky under different conditions, we will discuss and practise tactics for mooring under different conditions.

  • 4.May 28th General Sailing Techniques

These include, effective tacking and gybing, rigging a preventer, reefing, sail trimming etc.

I am looking for volunteer experienced and skilled skippers to help with these sessions, please contact me to offer to help. I might need larger boats than mine if we have a large number of participants.

The Cruising Log Book Project

I have permission to use the BlueSeas template as a basis for our own PYBC log book. I have had good informal feedback. The idea is to update the template and put a PYBC stamp on it and then have a small number printed up and sold in the Club.

I would appreciate more feedback.

Is it too complex, recording too much?

What can be discarded?

What needs to be added?

A copy of the template can be found HERE

Cruising in partnership with the CAI

As you know we are partnering with the CAI and promoting their cruising programme. I have updated our Calendar to include their events.

I need feedback on all of the above. To make it easy, I can be texted on 087 8146265 or emailed on

If you intend to come along to any of the events, just text me with the date of the event, for example for next Sunday, just text "May 7"
